The Westin Peachtree Plaza is an iconic fixture among Atlanta’s skyline. It is the city’s tallest building, and up until this trip, I had always wondered what it was like to stay there. So, when making plans to attend an awards ceremony in Buckhead, I booked a room. Here’s what my experience was like.
If you’re arriving by car like I did, weekends including Fridays can be busy at the hotel’s ground level entrance for valet parking.As a note, this trip was a little before the Marriott rolled out its Bonvoy loyalty program.
Inside the Westin Peachtree Plaza
Once inside, it’s a walk over to an escalator and up one level to the check-in area.
There were a few check-in staff members working there, and just one guest checking in at the SPG elite desk so the process did not take long.
I had booked one of the hotel’s standard rooms but thanks to my Starwood Preferred Guest gold status I was told I would actually be staying in a room with a “preferred view.” These rooms are the ones that look over Atlanta’s Olympic Park, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and the CNN Center.
I thanked the check-in staff and walked over to the main set of elevators. I found the one that went to my floor and was soon zooming up toward my room.
Since the vast majority of the building is one giant cylinder in shape, much taller than it is wide, sweeping curves are a cornerstone of the hotel’s design. The hallways on each floor are one big circle. The rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows that look out, and are curved to the shape of the building as well.
The king guest room I was in featured Westin’s Heavenly bed, an extra tall headboard with built-in reading lights, and a separate desk by the window for work. In the far corner, a small reading chair and ottoman seemed inviting for a seat.
A connected desk with a lamp near the window provided a good space for work.
The bathroom had a large, square mirror with a surround light and a walk-in waterfall shower with a sliding door.
The waterfall shower was roomy.
Sweeping views from the top
I didn’t spend a lot of time inside the hotel during this trip, but the property’s top level restaurant and bar is worth a visit. It’s called the Sundial, and is spread across the two top floors of the building.
The first level is a full restaurant and the next level is a bar with lots and lots of seating. Bottom line at Sundial: the drinks are expensive but the sweeping views of Atlanta are priceless. Even better, you don’t have to make a purchase to take in the view.
Once outside, the Westin Peachtree Plaza offers some of the easiest access to key parts of downtown attractions. These include SkyView Atlanta, World of Coke, and the College Football Hall of Fame.
When it came time to leave, it was just a quick walk down to the parking level where my stay began. The valet staff was helpful and prompt, although the experience of parking isn’t as good as Atlanta’s Hyatt Regency downtown.
Overall, it was a quality stay and I’d stay again the next time I’m in downtown Atlanta.
