TravelTactics.com: Survival Strategies for World Travelers

BEWARE Northwest and other Summer Travel

1. If you are bracing yourself for summer travel -- let me caution that that it is not going to be easy. Expect long lines to check in and when clearing security, full flights and stressed staff. But there are some established strategies for dealing with such challenges.

2. On the bankruptcy front, the good news is that Delta seems to have bypassed a potential showdown with its pilots, so don't hesitate to book Delta moving forward. The bad news: things aren't so rosy at Northwest. The flight attendants turned down management's proposal for a new contract, and the bankruptcy judge has ordered both sides back to the negotiating table. If an agreement is not reached, a strike COULD be the eventual outcome mid-summer if the bankruptcy court enables management to void the current contract. My advice -- hold off booking on Northwest for now.

3. Haven't booked yet -- gasp! But here's some advice that may help you choose the "best website" for making your reservation.

4. If you're going abroad, and are not sure about cell phone use outside the US -- here is some excellent guidance.

5. Finally, our major airlines are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their frequent flyer programs. Have they been a bonanza -- or a bust? While I think these programs are the best thing since sliced bread -- not everyone agrees.
